MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Emphasizing the need for peace and prosperity, China on Wednesday reiterated its opposition to the deployment of the US Typhon Mid-Range Capability missile system in the Philippines. The remarks follow statements by Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. defending the Philippines’ right to enhance its military capabilities.
Teodoro’s Stance on Military Enhancements
On Tuesday, Teodoro asserted that the Philippines’ plans for military modernization, including the deployment of the US missile system, are part of the country’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept. He stressed that these measures are aligned with national interests and adhere to the country’s independent foreign policy.
“These efforts are not directed at any specific nation but aim to address security risks and challenges,” Teodoro clarified. He also called on China’s ruling Communist Party to reduce tensions by halting provocative actions, withdrawing its illegal presence from Philippine waters, and respecting international law.
China’s Response
In a strongly worded statement, a spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy in Manila described Teodoro’s comments as “unjust and ideologically biased.” The spokesperson reiterated China’s consistent opposition to the US missile system’s deployment in the region, labeling it a product of “bloc confrontation and Cold War mentality.”
“Our region needs peace and development, not confrontation or mid-range missile systems,” the spokesperson emphasized. They also claimed that Teodoro’s stance conflicts with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to de-escalate maritime tensions through dialogue and diplomatic efforts.
China urged the Philippines to reconsider its decision and remove the Typhon missile system, calling it a step in the wrong direction.
Background on the Typhon Missile System
The US Army’s Typhon Mid-Range Capability missile system arrived in the Philippines on April 11, 2024, for bilateral military exercises known as “Salaknib.” The deployment has drawn sharp criticism from China amid heightened maritime disputes in the South China Sea.
The missile system’s arrival marks a significant step in the Philippines’ efforts to modernize its military in the face of escalating regional tensions. However, China views the move as counterproductive to fostering peace and stability in the region.
Growing Regional Tensions
The Philippines’ collaboration with the United States on defense initiatives has intensified, drawing ire from China. As both nations navigate these growing tensions, diplomatic efforts will likely play a crucial role in addressing the geopolitical challenges posed by the South China Sea dispute.
